Uses

Wind Turbine.- the properties of the balsa wood light weight do the wind energy work efficency and production clean energy.

In the marine and aquatic industry.- Due to its floatability characteristic it is used mainly in flotation devices, boat hulls and speed boats.

Transport industry.- Balsa wood has been used in floors, and ceilings of airplanes storages, for the containers walls and trains floors, Due to their lightweight it is used in airplanes floors and recreational vehicules for it properties exceptional acoustic versatile and thermally.

In the US military Industry.- It is used for the construction of load recipients, contention tanks, pallets, airtranportables containers.

Entertainment industry.- for the construction of balsa panels for walls, and many other different uses for it properties economical.

Arquitecture.- To design arquitectural scale models for it properties the easily hand cut or machine cut.

Hobbies Model.- For the construction airplane modeling to scale, model aircraft.

Sporting and Recreational.- For the construction equipment surfboard.

Balsa

Technical Data: Balsa (Ochroma Pyramidale).- It's a native species from Tropical America. Is can be found in low lands and along the rivers. It grows up to 30 meters high and 40 centimeters diameter. The balsa tree grows very fast and normally it's ready to be cut in around three and five years. The balsa tree is commonly known as a nurse tree in the plant world because of the rapid growth and very large leaves which provide much needed shelter to other more delicate plants and trees when fire or logging has stripped the land clear Cultivated properly, maximum timber can be cut from the log therefore reducing waster. The thick bark/skin and off cuts are shredded and return to the plantation for aid in soil rejuvenation or used to fire the kilns. Although balsa wood is technically labelled a hard wood, it is actually very soft and light in texture. It is one of the lightest commercially grown timbers in the world. Having the strongest to weight ratio means it is a very versatile product. If you were to put the wood under a microscope it would reveal that the cells are very large with thin walls, contributing to a product with a minimal solid material count, hence why it is lighter than other woods. Balsa wood is classified as hardwood not a softwood because the tree has leaves and not needles and instead of seed cones it has seed pods to name the more obverse features. Balsa wood's lightness with strength comes from the cells structure much like a honey comb with the cell walls thin with a small amount of Lignum which is natures cement that hold all the cells together. Versatility is balsa wood's strongest characteristic and has many uses in a variety of constructions and purposes, where its diverse properties are required. Easily cut easily machined, safe from toxins are also important to mention.

Characteristics: Balsa, when looked through a microscope shows is very known cell structure which allows to support high loads by distributing the weight from once cell to the other.  When used in sandwich structures has a very  high impact resistance.  It also has high resistance to fire and it also provides a good acoustic and thermal isolation.

  • Thermally versatile
  • Economical
  • Excellent fatigue resistance
  • High tensile/compression/shear and flexural strength to weight ratio
  • Easily machine or hand cut
  • Exceptional acoustic properties
  • Buoyant
  • Energy absorbing

Thank to the small spaces between its cells it also resists the movement of water giving balsa its floatability characteristic. It's very easy to work with an excellent in sanding applications. It can also resist corrosive chemicals even better than stell.

Balsa wood (Ochroma Lagopus & Ochroma Pyramidale) is the world's lightest commercial timber. It has been commercially logged since the 1900's and sourced for its exceptional qualities in strength to weight ratio, its outstanding buoyancy properties and its thermal and acoustic standards.
